3-2-1 v Eels

3- Mannering. Superb. Enormous work rate tonight, even by his lofty standards.

2- Johnson. Some big plays, but most impressed with the tough stuff that he did. Made quite a few crucial tackles and didn't miss many. Still a way to go, but he may have turned the corMannering. Superb.

1- Lillyman. Just pipping Matulino, who could have easily got this point.

Hon mentions to Thompson for the match winner. Lousi and Vete really stepped up too. Lolohea with another try saver.

Great win

Not the most important topic, but I am curious to know what fellow St George supporters think of our emblem/badge. I think it is a bit dated(80's) My preference would be more of a St George slaying the dragon(traditional)like on the Russian coat of arms maybe.

Former Dolphins kicker Garo Yepremian dies at 70

Garo Yepremian, the former NFL kicker who helped the Miami Dolphins win consecutive NFL championships has died of cancer. He was 70 years of age.

His 37-yard field goal in the second overtime ended the longest game in NFL history, a Dolphins' playoff victory over Kansas City on Christmas 1971, and he helped Miami win back-to-back NFL titles in 1972-73. But Yepremian's gaffe in the fourth quarter of the Super Bowl in January 1973 nearly spoiled the Dolphins' bid to complete a perfect season.

With Miami leading 14-0 and on the verge of finishing the season 17-0, the Washington Redskins blocked Yepremian's field-goal attempt. He picked up the ball and tried to throw it but fumbled, and the Redskins' Mike Bass ran it 49 yards for a touchdown.

Todd Carney

We desperately need quality halves. Norman just does not have it. Yes Carney is a total goose, but he is a quality play maker. Imagine Carney and Foran as our halves? Creativity, good defence. Norman to fullback. He played well there for the Broncos. It'd take the playmaker pressure off him and let him run what he sees in front of him, chiming into the attack, using his running game more.
The above would improve our game no end.

Bring on the negative baggers.

NRL set to land $30 million windfall from new turnover deal with betting agencies

Quote:

NRL set to land $30 million windfall from new turnover deal with betting agencies

The NRL are on the brink of finalising a rich and trailblazing new deal with betting agencies that is expected to net the code more than $30 million over the next three years.

Officials at Rugby League Central have seized on the terms of incoming state government legislation dictating how the proceeds of betting should be directed to sports themselves to switch from a percentage of profit model to a take of bookmakers' turnover on the game.

New three-year agreements with Tabcorp and corporate bookies are forecast to increase the NRL's slice from gambling operators from $5 million a year to between $10m and $12m annually.

The NRL and other sports have been eager to change their betting income arrangements since the landmark High Court case won by Racing NSW in 2012 that saw millions poured into racing via the introduction of a fee of 1.5 per cent of turnover enforced on agencies.

The long-existing NRL deal only returns the code a 5 per cent piece of bookies' profits on rugby league betting, which amounts to a far less generous figure given the low profit margins with wagering on the game.

Exactly what percentage of turnover agencies will now have to fork out to the NRL was on Friday unclear but there will be a sliding scale in place with lower rates paid to the governing body for standard bets, such as head-to-head and higher rates for more exotic wagers.

Betting on rugby league is such big business the TAB has previously reported it holds on average more than $1 million for every Monday night match, its most popular game of the week, and holds nearly $200 million each season. Other estimates place the total turnover for betting on league each round at more than $30m.

The NRL is the first Australian code to strike turnover deals but it has been a long-term objective of the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports, which represents the likes of the NRL, AFL, soccer and rugby.

"The sports have all expressed a wish to receive a higher share of income that's generated from betting on their products," COMPPS executive director Malcolm Speed said. "The team sports are still well behind racing in the percentage they receive and the team sports would like to bridge the gap.

"As betting has grown they are in a position to command a higher percentage. It's good to see that they're now doing better."

The new deals have been begrudgingly accepted by bookmakers.

"We knew this was coming and it's been mooted for a while," said Gerard Daffy of UBet. "We know the world is a changing place and I don't think anyone would argue that any sport is not entitled to their share of the revenue stream. No one will tell you that they like paying more but most of us can see the logic behind it and have an understanding."

There is concern, however, about the prominence of unlicensed offshore betting agencies, which unlike Australian operators - who have integrity agreements with the NRL - are not regulated.

Daffy says there are more gambling agencies taking bets on rugby league overseas, including the Caribbean islands and Sweden, than in Australia itself.

"Their big problem is not what goes on here, it's what goes on elsewhere," he said. "There's now about 100 bookies in the world that now bet on AFL and rugby league and they contribute zero. Some of them bet on a lot of options that we're not allowed to in regards to our agreement with the NRL. I'm hearing of bookmakers overseas that are taking bets off individuals in excess of $20,000 in games of rugby league and AFL."

Daffy also believes the NRL must tighten up its policy around the naming of teams, which occurs on Tuesday night. Teams that have played on Monday night are named less than 24 hours later despite often having no resemblance to the line-up that will actually take the field in the following round. "It's a two-way street and we expect things in return," he said.

Speed said COMPPS and the sports had been arguing for several years for changes to the Interactive Gambling Act in an effort to make local agencies more competitive against their foreign rivals by enabling them to have online in-play betting.

"It's a weakness in the system and we've arguing that it should be rectified," Speed said.

NRL could net $10 million a season in deal with betting agencies

The NRL will become the first major professional sport in Australia to sign off on a landmark deal with betting agencies that could net the code $30 million over the next three years.

The NRL has been in negotiations with 16 betting agencies around the country including Tabcorp, Sportsbet and William Hill to secure a bigger share of money bet on the game.

The NRL has been without a wagering partner since it severed ties with Tabcorp and a deal fell over with Tom Waterhouse in 2013 but it still receives a chunk of revenue from agencies.

What is significant about the new arrangement is that it will be based on turnover, as opposed to profit as it had been in the past.

This is expected to double the funds generated for the code from betting agencies. The current *arrangement is netting about $5m each season.

The Weekend Australian understands that the NRL has already reached agreement with most of the 16 agencies and an official announcement is only weeks away.

All parties have worked closely with the NSW government, which is expected to introduce regu*lations to support the new agreement.

The contracts will still give the NRL control over the types of bets that can be made and also the right to veto any bets that may encourage illegal betting activity.

The NRL has had these powers for a number of years but they will be officially formalised under the new agreement, which is signed by each agency.

The NRL has had its problems in the past with illegal betting on games, most famously in a match between North Queensland and Canterbury in Townsville in 2010.

Bulldogs prop Ryan Tandy was subsequently found guilty in court of match-fixing and banned from the sport for life after suspicious betting activity on the first scoring play.

More than 95 per cent of the money on that market was held on a Cowboys penalty goal. Tandy came under scrutiny after losing possession and giving away a penalty in kicking distance. The sting failed to come off after the Cowboys chose to run the ball and scored a try instead.

The game had an issue last year with a number of players who were caught betting on games following an audit of the betting records of 1500 players, staff and officials.

It led to Manly winger David Williams being suspended for the rest of the season after he was found guilty of betting on games he was involved in.

North Queensland backrower Ethan Lowe and lower graders Cody Nelson (Gold Coast) and Slade Griffin and Hymel Hunt (Melbourne) all received two-game bans.

The NRL’s move could have ramifications for other sports it is affiliated with in COMPPS (the Coalition of Major Professional and Participation Sports), which includes the AFL, ARU, FFA, Cricket Australia, Netball Australia and Tennis Australia.

NRL deal with betting agencies could pour $30m back into rugby league

NRL chief Dave Smith is on the verge of scoring more than $30 million from corporate bookmakers to pour back into rugby league.

Under a breakthrough deal being finalised with betting agencies, the NRL will double its take from bets on matches.

Sources familiar with the negotiations said three-year agreements had been reached with most agencies, including Tabcorp.

The new deals are based on a percentage of betting turnover going back to the game rather than a percentage of the agencies’ profits.

One source said instead of the NRL receiving about $5 million a year, its take would grow to between $10 million and $12 million.

The deals will enable the NRL to retain control over the types of bets made on rugby league, allowing the game’s administrators to veto bets that might encourage *illegal activity.

One industry source warned the deals could result in tighter odds for punters, as betting agency margins on rugby league were smaller than in racing.

After that, we were treated to the four NSW candidates who have absolutely no idea. I could not believe how bad the incumbents were (Hodkinson/Reynolds). As for the Roosters, Friend showed more skill than Maloney/Pearce combined. NSW are in big trouble.

Partial relocation, the soft option?

Hawthorn, the current AFL premiers, began taking some games to Launceston in 2001. In 2006 they entered into a contract with the Tasmanian Government to play four home games a year in the city. As a result they added 9000 members.

A PricewaterhouseCooper's report into their contribution to the Tasmanian economy found that their presence during the 2014 season generated a total direct expenditure of $17.5 million for the state. This combined with a total of $12 million in brand exposure for Tasmania across all Hawthorn assets for 2014, brought the value of the partnership to almost $30 million.

By increasing supply in Tasmania, Hawthorn has received a lucrative sponsorship from the Tasmanian Government, 9000 memberships and healthy increase in brand value which in turn increases their corporate appeal.

The reduction in supply of their home games in Melbourne has resulted in nearly a 50% increase in home crowds. They are still a traditional Melbourne based club, yet they have expanded their business and are reaping the rewards.

The NRL can learn from this model. There have already been attempts to put teams in Adelaide, Perth and the Central Coast that have failed in the past. Maybe now though, these areas provide new lucrative markets for certain clubs to expand into. If there is too much supply in Sydney, move some games on a permanent basis to another market.

There are potential owners and regions that want to invest in the game – Central Queensland, Wellington, Perth, Brisbane etc. It might not be the right time to add more teams or relocate a club, but as a code we can still build our business and expand. By doing so ensuring the viability of some existing clubs.

The NRL has always had trouble with the Gold Coast. They don't have team in Central Queensland. The region is heartland Rugby League country. It is home to global mining companies, LNG plants and is one of Australia's richest agricultural regions.

They have an investor who wants to bring NRL to the community. Maybe 9000 extra members and exposure to some new sponsorship opportunities would help. The NRL could distribute some supply – let's say 3 or 4 games – which will increase demand on the coast.

Smith to Saints/Roosters?

Reports going around that Jeremy Smith is going to end his career at either the Roosters or Saints. Seems to be towards Saints according to today's Daily Telegraph/Fox Sports News. I would post link but currently thread made from phone, information is in the NRL rumoured signings thread.

Losing Smith and Scott takes away nearly our entire pack aggression. Yet of more concern is why Smith wants to leave? Is there something happening behind the scenes, or is just money? Whilst it mightn't be best practice of the club I would like to see us take a more firm line towards simply letting players go.

If Scott, BJ and Smith are leaving due to contract clauses, why don't we demand a player trade with the clubs they sign for. A transfer fee? Something? The amount of experience we have let walk out for next year is a worry, especially as we have made zero external signings.

Thoughts?

Matty Johns Footy Show

Hey all,

I have been watching the Matty john footy show for a while now and have become a huge fan, not because of the host but more because of our own Hinny and Fletcher segments.

They are refreshing / funny and I no longer watch the Thursday night footy show on Ch9 simply because of I have lost interest. I even tuned in tonight and I was bored very quickly. Is it me or does the show seem just plane boring now?

Back to the Matty John Footy Show, I have been noticing for a while now that Matty john has the biggest hard on for Matt Moylan... Has anyone noticed this? I have even heard him over and over plug Moylan on Tripple M radio.

What's the go there? Yeah he is a good player but I just don't see how he keeps pluging him over and over for the fullback roll now that Hayne is gone. I see better options for NSW and I am sure in the years to come Moylan will continue to grow as a star and fill that role.

Thoughts?

Jeremy Smith to return ?

Telegraph reporting he's in talks with the Dragons for a return in 2016. I don't agree with everything in the article ( i.e. - Smith walking straight back into the pack, but a deal makes sense with the club looking for mostly bargains until 2017 )

From Knights to Dragons, NRL veteran Jeremy Smith to extend his rugby league career
JAMES HOOPER THE DAILY TELEGRAPH MAY 15, 2015 12:00AM SHARE

THE planets are aligning for ex-Kiwi Test enforcer Jeremy Smith to return to St George Illawarra next season, the club with which he helped smash a 30-season premiership drought in 2010.

Sport Confidential can reveal Dragons coach Paul McGregor and Smith have spoken, with the club also discussing Nate Myles as a potential recruit prior to the Queensland forward signing with Manly.

Despite turning 35 last month, Smith remains one of the most hardened forwards in the NRL and could walk straight into the starting pack as a replacement for Trent Merrin. Merrin and Smith are completley different types of player, but the Dragons would still have ample creativity in Benji Marshall and Garreth Widdop.

More concerning is the void Smith’s departure would leave at the Newcastle Knights. Captain Kurt Gidley, Beau Scott and BJ Leilua are already confirmed departures from Steel City at the end of the season. Smith would mean a combined 719 NRL games walking away from the club.

The Dragons’ top priority remains the retention of club icons and local juniors Ben Creagh and Jason Nightingale

It's time to do what is best for business in 5 years time

The NRL wants to become big on a world stage and having the heart of Rugby League, Sydney, divided up into a plethora of fan-bases is only reducing from the spectacle and giving rival codes plenty of ammunition to use against us (even though the NRL is the most watched television program on the East Cost of Australia).

I believe that the Eels are going to struggle to win a premiership in their current state and we would be of most benefit to undertake the following. I bring to you:

(Inspirational logo for the real one that will be made)

Imagine how competitive this team will be with the entire juniors of the west at our disposal? I believe the Tigers and Panthers represent the best ideals and values for a merge with us and I think it's time to start moving towards the Western Sydney Catfish.

It's going to happen eventually so why not save us all more pain and misery and start working towards the inevitable. To watch them play in front of a packed out Pirtek Stadium every game as a successful venture will be magical.

I thought this warranted its own thread.

After medical consultations this week, Newcastle Knights five-eighth Jarrod Mullen has been ruled out for 4-6 weeks due to a toe injury.

Mullen has injured the medial sesamoid in his right foot and the plan is to manage the injury.

Mullen will be rested to allow his toe a chance to heal on its own before season ending surgery is considered.

The Newcastle Knights and Joey Leilua have mutually agreed to part ways at the conclusion of season 2015.

Leilua has exercised a clause in his contract allowing him to terminate the final year of his contract being 2016.

“Joey is a quality player and we are disappointed to lose him for next season however we certainly wanted to work with him to reach an amicable outcome for both parties,” Director of Football Michael Hagan said.

The Club has been working through the process with Leilua and his management before finalising the matter this week.

“This is a personal decision for me and I want to thank the Knights for working through it with me,” Leilua said.

“Now that it is finalised, I want to focus on playing good football for the Knights and finishing off the season well.”

Leilua joined the Knights in season 2013 and has played 50 games for the Club to date.

Piers Morgan goes full retard in his pursuit of a homo-erotic relationship with KP

Quote:

Kevin Pietersen is a rare, maverick talent brought down by a mediocre bunch of petty, lying political pygmies - every true England sports fan should demand his return
  • Kevin Pietersen told he will not be considered for selection by England
  • He scored a career-high triple century for Surrey against Leicestershire
  • But ECB chairman Colin Graves and new director of cricket Andrew Strauss have said Pietersen's services will not be required
  • And their treatment of the star batsman has been an absolute disgrace
  • England sports fans should agree with me and demand his reinstatement

Kevin Pietersen, as his critics love to remind us, can be cocky, egotistical, arrogant, abrasive, confrontational, uncompromising, over-emotional, irrational, stubborn, pig-headed, fiery, and occasionally a complete pain in the a**e.

He is also, even his biggest detractors concede, a dedicated, driven, ruthlessly focused, ferociously hard-working, sublimely talented sportsman who doesn’t get drunk, take drugs, fall out of nightclubs or womanise.

And, from my personal experience knowing him for the past decade, Kevin’s an intensely loyal, kind, generous and caring friend, son, husband and father.

Such are the many contradictions of KP – the man we all know and love/hate, who has been dominating the headlines for the last 48 hours, as he so often has since he burst onto the scene in 2004/5.

It’s no great secret that I am both a good friend of his, and a huge admirer of his cricket ability.

I’ve spent much of the last two days defending him on the radio, TV and social media airwaves. Not because I’m some kind of obsessed lovesick puppy as a few of my Twitter followers have suggested, but because I’m passionate about England cricket and sickened by the way he’s been treated.

Kevin is, quite simply, the best batsman I’ve ever seen in an England shirt; an exhilarating, swash-buckling destroyer of bowlers.

The stats don’t lie: he’s England’s highest ever run scorer in all forms of international cricket.

Yet yesterday, he was tossed onto the scrapheap in a decision that I genuinely believe is the single most disgraceful, petty and vindictive act in the history of English sport.

The background to this stunning moment of self-defeating madness is rooted in classic old English establishment nonsense.

Kevin was sacked from the England team 15 months ago after the disastrous Ashes tour of Australia, despite scoring the most runs of any of our batsmen.

He was made the scapegoat for pathetic failure by every one of his colleagues and coaching staff on that trip.

And he wasn’t just dropped, he was banned for life.

To justify this inexplicable, unprecedented action, the England cricket board began to spin against him through the medium of favoured journalists.

It was a vile and vicious campaign.

They claimed there was a ‘secret dossier’ of 50 misdemeanours that Pietersen had supposedly committed in Australia. Yet not one of them has ever actually been revealed, or been born out by a single shred of evidence. (Other than the damning – uncontested - allegation that he whistled when he was out in Sydney. Something that he tends to do whether he gets nought or a hundred.)

We were told he was a ‘massive dressing room distraction’ whose mere presence wrecked team morale. This despite the fact that the England team he starred in had enjoyed the most successful decade in its history.

We were assured that all his team-mates ‘hated’ him. Yet every one of them who was actually asked said they had no problem with him and hadn’t seen or heard about any of these supposed ‘misdemeanours’ in Australia.

Kevin was bitterly hurt by his banishment and the vitriol poured on his head.

He was just 33 years old, and believed he had at least five or six years potential international cricket left in him.

To see his career brought to a sudden, shuddering halt hit him harder than he’s ever hit a cricket ball.

I remember sitting in a cafe with him and seeing his eyes fill up with tears at the thought of not playing for England again.

‘My boy (his son Dylan) will never see his Dad in an England shirt,’ he said. ‘That breaks my heart.’

I communicate with Kevin most days of the week in some form and he’s a quick-witted guy with a great sense of humour who can laugh at himself as much as he loves dishing it out.

If I’ve had difficult times in my career, or personal life, I can guarantee KP will be one of the first to call me and check I’m OK.

When I had a big birthday dinner last summer, he sneaked off at the end of the evening and quietly paid the £2000 bill.

Twice he’s come down and played for me in an annual game I have against my Sussex village. Both times he’s taken it seriously, batted magnificently, then spent hours signing autographs and posing for photos with the locals.

So I don’t recognise the absurdly grotesque caricature that gets regularly painted of him as some kind of monster.

But it’s fair to say he doesn’t suffer fools, abhors mediocrity, will speak his mind, and if challenged, will always stand up and fight his corner.

A few months ago, after he enjoyed a successful Big Bash 20/20 series in Australia where he ended up the tournament’s second top scorer, Kevin had several conversations with new ECB chairman, Colin Graves.

Graves made it very clear to him that the past was in the past, there was going to a new clean slate, and if he went back to county cricket and scored runs he would be back in the running for England selection.

Graves repeated this to the media, and never retracted the statement.

So Kevin, encouraged by friends like me, gave up a lucrative £200,000 contract to play in the Indian Premier League, and joined Surrey where he announced he would play for free – donating his match fees to his charitable foundation.

This week, he scored 355 not out, his highest ever first class score. I was there for much of it and he batted with stupendous power and brilliance.

Afterwards he was jubilant.

‘How can they not pick me now?’ he laughed.

‘It’s impossible!’ I replied, equally confidently.

But that very night, new ECB director Andrew Strauss banned Kevin all over again.

Strauss and Pietersen have history.

When Strauss was England captain in 2012, Kevin was caught texting derogatory things about him to his friends in the South African team.

He was, rightly, dropped. Though I suspect many other international players text each other similar stuff during a series, just as I suspect a few Mirror journalists probably texted their Sun journalist mates that I was an idiot during my 10-year editorship. Moaning about your boss is not something unique to Kevin Pietersen.

Kevin, though, knew what he’d done was wrong, naive and stupid.

He made fulsome, sincere apologies to the team and was ‘rehabilitated’ back into the side as a result.

That should have been the end of it.

But Strauss has clearly never forgiven him. Recently he was himself caught on a live Sky commentary feed calling Pietersen a ‘merkin’.

Yesterday, he exacted the ultimate revenge.

But what right has he got to ban the country’s best player purely for personal reasons of animosity?

We, the fans, pay Strauss’s salary, just as we did when he worked for Sky.

His job is to make the England team as competitive as possible by choosing the best possible coach and team.

And Kevin Pietersen did everything he was asked to do by Strauss’s own ECB boss to put himself back in contention.

It turned out to be a big fat lie.

Colin Graves opened the door, then shamefully let it be shut back in his face.

I watched Andrew Strauss yesterday trying to explain why he banned KP again and it was pitiful.

Repeatedly he was asked what Kevin had done to deserve this. Repeatedly he spoke about ‘trust issues’ with the ECB but couldn’t actually say what had caused them.

Strauss then revealed that after re-sacking him, he offered Pietersen an advisor role with the one-day side.

So he didn’t trust him to play but he did trust him to give advice to the team. Have you ever heard anything more ridiculous?

The best book I’ve ever read about leadership was ‘The Art of Captaincy’ by former England cricket captain Mike Brearley.

I met him for the first time when we played in a charity game last summer and I asked him about KP.

‘I’ve only spoken properly to him once, and that was on an internal flight in India,’ Brearley told me. ‘Kevin was polite, respectful, very knowledgeable about the game and I liked him very much.’

I waited for the ‘but’. It came, but not quite how I expected.

‘But friends of mine whose opinion I value tell me he can be a bit of a kn*b'.

Pause.

Then Brearley chuckled.

‘Frankly, though, if being a bit of a kn*b was the criteria for being banned from the team, I’d have had half an England side in the ‘80s!’

‘How would you handle him?’ I asked.

‘I’d do what I did with Ian Botham – tell him he’s the greatest player in the world. Maverick, mercurial players need to be constantly encouraged, not treated like unmanageable outcasts.’

Oh for a Mike Brearley running English cricket now. Or the England football team for that matter.

He understood that men like Botham, Flintoff and Pietersen electrified the game. Just as the likes of Gazza, George Best and Eric Cantona lit up the world of football.

All big, flawed personalities with massive talent. They are the reason people flood to watch sport. They are the heroes young kids want to emulate. They are the superstars that allow everyone else to make money and enjoy success.

And with that superstardom comes a particular pressure that few can truly understand.

Kevin Pietersen is a rare, wondrous talent who has been brought down by a mediocre bunch of petty little political pygmies prepared to put their own personal feelings before the good of the team and the country.

I don’t care if the England team all hate each other so long as they win.

Who wants a group of happy campers sitting round a log fire in the dressing room singing love songs to each other – if they then get beaten as badly as England have since Pietersen was sacked?

In 1999, Manchester United strikers Teddy Sheringham and Andy Cole didn’t exchange a single civil word to each other the whole season.

United won the treble.

What happened to Kevin Pietersen this week is an absolute disgrace and every true England sports fan should agree with me and demand his reinstatement.

Are we targeting the wrong juniors?

I remember seeing a thing on tv some years ago where a Parra juniors coach was interviewed and said something along the lines of "When identifying talent if I have a choice out of an athlete or someone with footy talent I'll take the athlete."
When I heard that I could not believe it, but if you look at our juniors over a number of years now we seem to be churning out a very similar type of player. And how many good 'footballers' who might not be the biggest units as kids have we lost who have gone to other clubs and become very good NRL players.
A mixture of big athlete types and players with genuine football smarts is what we need.

just reading a fox sports list on un-contracted players for next season.

And I noticed Trent Hodkinson was still unsigned.

The Warriors have made it clear that they are still in the market for another player...

I think he probably won't want to move to NZ and there would be better offers from the likes of Manly...

But he would almost be the final piece of the puzzle for the Warriors wouldn't he??

Rowdy told he's free to look elsewhere.

I will get an article link soon. But apparently Lawrence has been given the green light to look elsewhere.

Lewis Brown is rumoured to be joining the club next season.

I've only heard of Santi, Lovett and Ava as being retained for next year.

Luani, Buchanan, Halatau, Moltzen, Richards are all off contract at the end of the year and we need to cut most of them to ease cap pressure.

Tampa Mayhem Open Letter to start 2nd Season

AN OPEN LETTER TO OUR FANS, PLAYERS AND SUPPORTERS
Tampa Mayhem are excited to announce we have secured a new home stadium, right in Tampa. All home games, starting with the pre-season game this Saturday at 3:30pm, will be played at Tampa Catholic High School Football Stadium. The Athletic Fields are located across the street from the main campus at 4630 North Rome Avenue, in the Wellswood section of Tampa. The move to a field located in Tampa will be a huge boost in attracting a larger fan base to attend games, and the sport in general.

How Can You Help?: We are asking all our fans, supporters and players to help drive the Mayhem Brand by joining us on our Facebook and Twitter accounts, and liking, sharing and retweeting all news about the team, and keep up to date at our website, www.MayhemRL.com. Sharing the excitement of attending High Level Rugby League Games with family and friends. With us all working as a team, we can continue to drive our sport into the mainstream American sporting landscape.

Along with the new venue, the Mayhem have also invested in a new range of supporter merchandise, and we have a new and exciting post-game venue, the Outpost Tap House and Tavern, that is also located right in Tampa. All fans are invited to join the team after games at THE OUTPOST to enjoy a relaxed Meet and Greet.

Season tickets that include all home and away games are being offered for just $25, and include a new “Mayhem on the Weekend” supporter shirt. As always children 15 and under will be admitted FREE.

Walk-up entry to home games is only $5, and concessions will be offered during games by Tampa Catholic Athletics, that is a great opportunity for us to give back to our community. (*Please no outside food or beverage)
All home games start at 3:30pm with gates open at 3:00pm.

As always we encourage everyone to support and consider all our sponsors anytime you’re in need of the product or service they offer. Without the support from these great companies and brands, the team would not be able to offer quality sporting events to our fans, or the high level facilities to our players.

*All potential players are reminded to read the training camp and tryout notes for May 15/16

Thank you all for supporting the Tampa Mayhem Rugby League Team, and with a great team effort, we know the Tampa Mayhem and the great sport we play, can continue to reach new heights in the greater Tampa area.

Looks like Matagi is off.

The Warriors are expected to release front-rower Suaia Matagi in the coming days to join a Sydney NRL team.

Matagi is contracted through to the end of the season but after playing in each of the Warriors' 24 games last season has made only one brief NRL appearance back in round one this year.

With Kiwis test prop Ben Matulino and Queensland Origin rep Jacob Lillyman the preferred starting pair and emerging duo Sam Lisone and Albert Vete commanding regular bench spots, Matagi has had limited opportunities to impress.

It's understood several Super League clubs were keen on signing the powerful ball-runner but he wants to remain in the NRL.

The 27-year-old would leave the Warriors as a fan favourite after overcoming a stint in Manawatu prison to successfully rebuild his life.

After starting out on the Auckland club circuit with the Te Atatu Roosters and Mount Albert Lions his good form was recognised with a spot in the Auckland representative team in 2009.

He went on to be join the Auckland Vulcans the following season and was a leading performer despite being able to play only domestically until the end of the 2012 season due to travel restrictions.

Matagi continued his progress with the Warriors before making his NRL debut against the Bulldogs in Wellington in round nine of the 2013 season.

He made 11 appearances that year before representing Toa Samoa at the 2013 World Cup and was chosen to represent the Kiwis at the 2014 Four Nations.

Looks like Matagi is off.

I've got some ideas to turn things around

1. Tell the players to not shower for four days prior to a match and wear the same gear they would on game day

2. Encourage the players to do a "Gary Lineker at the World Cup"

Let's see opponents try to get near them then.

McKinnon may sue the Storm and NRL

While he obviously would have a case, after having $1.1m raised for him and a job for life, I could easily see public opinion starting to turn against him and that job disappearing after a bit.

Quote:

Injured Newcastle Knights star Alex McKinnon weighing up advice to sue

Alex McKinnon is weighing up legal advice to sue the Melbourne Storm and the NRL following the tackle which left the 23-year-old in a wheelchair.

Fairfax Media has learnt McKinnon has engaged a Sydney-based law firm to explore his rights after the tackle by the Storm's Jordan McLean ended his NRL career prematurely. It is understood the legal advice indicates that McKinnon has a strong potential case for taking action against the Storm and the NRL.

Despite the recommendation, McKinnon is reportedly hesitant to start action as he is mindful of the support he has received from the NRL and the wider rugby league community since the injury. McKinnon did not wish to comment when contacted by Fairfax Media on Wednesday night. It is thought McLean would not be personally liable for the tackle, but his club could come under the microscope. McLean was suspended for seven games for a dangerous throw.

McKinnon's legal team will point to a case involving former Wests Tigers forward Jarrod McCracken, who was awarded $97,000 in 2006 after suing the Melbourne Storm and two players he claimed cut short his career with a spear tackle. In this case, McCracken's career was ended after he injured his neck and spine after a tackle by Stephen Kearney and Marcus Bai.

NSW Supreme Court Justice Robert Hulme said in his judgment: "[The injuries] also prevented him from continuing in a career for which he had a passion and which must have involved substantial satisfaction and reward in addition to that of a monetary nature."

Any potential case could also involve the NRL and explore if the governing body is liable. Questions will be asked if the NRL should have taken a more concerted effort to crack down on lifting tackles, like they have done since McKinnon's injury.

There have been a host of instances where players have sued an opponent because of foul play. Former international Dale Shearer, who was awarded $60,000 by the District Court after his jaw was broken in a high tackle by Eastern Suburbs centre David French during a 1988 game, while Queensland forward Daryl Brohman received about $35,000 after being hit in the jaw by Les Boyd.

NRL supporters donated more than $1.1 million for McKinnon during the fundraising Rise for Alex round last year. The NRL has also offered McKinnon a "job for life". He started a role with the Knights in January. "My role will be mostly football related and working with the juniors, however I hope to also contribute on the commercial side," McKinnon said in January. He suffered two fractured vertebrae when driven head-first into the ground in a three-man tackle in the final seconds of the first half of Newcastle's 28-20 loss to the Storm on March 24 last year.

He spent four weeks in intensive care at the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne before being transferred to a spinal rehabilitation ward at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital, where he learned how to operate an electronic wheelchair. In October he relocated to the Gold Coast to begin an intensive program He stood up unaided for the first time in January.

McKinnon represented the Junior Kangaroos and NSW under-20s.

Warriors prop to make mid-season switch

New Zealand Warriors prop – and cult hero – Suaia Matagi is expected to be granted a release from the club within a matter of days to join a yet-to-be-named Sydney team.

The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract with the Warriors and has received a mere 24 minutes in first grade this season. He was the 18th man for last weekend’s game against Cronulla.

Warriors coach Andrew McFadden has preferred to use youngsters Sam Lisone and Albert Vete on the interchange bench while Ben Matulino and Jacob Lillyman were his choices as the team’s starting props.

English Super League clubs have expressed their interest in signing Matagi but he wants to remain in the NRL to continue with his well received community projects, which include a one-man play, which are designed to help young people not copy his mistakes as a teenager.

Thoughts if we sign him?

Representative Rearrangements for the Rangers ???

Hearing reports that the Qld Rangers rep team (selected from the QRL divisions) will be meeting a NSW "Ron Massey Cup" selection in July.

Also that the U 16 & 18 QLD Maroons (Residents) games v NSW Country are off this year. ( No replacement games mentioned)

No word on whether the Rangers game is affected.

So could be a case of the QLD Rangers getting two games this year - OR - just the one again but with different opposition !

Anyone the wiser !

(Personally I'd like to see a separate Qld Country and Brisbane rep teams play opposition ...but meh ..,. take what you can get these days!)

One Rabbitohs player was particularly pleased to hear about the re-signing of Alex Johnston and Cameron McInnes today – fellow Souths Junior, Dylan Walker.
Walker spoke glowingly to the media about the pairs’ re-signing, with the centre fondly recalling the days where the two – along with Rabbitohs winger Aaron Gray – played alongside each other in the Junior Bunnies development squads.
“We’ve been playing together since we were 13,” said Walker.
“It’s just awesome to see them boys re-sign. It’s good for the fans, food for the Members and good for the Club.
“It’s especially good for myself having the boys around that I know really well.”
The Rabbitohs extended the contracts of Alex Johnston and Cameron McInnes today, both committing to the Club until at least the end of 2017.

Johnston, 20, has played 27 NRL games since making his debut on ANZAC day against the Broncos last season, scoring 28 tries at a rate of more than one try per game to start his first grade career.

A product of the La Perouse Panthers, Johnston has gone on to make his debut for the Australian Kangaroos in the ANZAC Test this year.

McInnes, 21, has played 12 NRL matches to date, all of which have been for the Rabbitohs, having made his first grade debut against the Dragons in round five, 2014.

Our u20's Front Row

We've got a great crop of front-rowers coming through together. Who's the best?
I'll make a case it might be Stanton Albert. The best prop on field in the Pacific test, and backed it up on the weekend's win over the Bronco's with 18 runs for 190m, 20 tackles, a line break, an offload, 7 tackle breaks, and a try. He's got a great build, and is impressively mobile.

Does anyone still not want to sack Flanno?

I think this is a better question nowadays.

Not liaising with Gorman about player swaps so should be the last straw with this guy. Surely after everything Flanno has gone through and put the club and it's supporters through, he should be doing absolutely everything by the books.

Good on Gorman for putting his foot down.

What if the World Club Challenge happened in 1994 ?

In 1994 both the English and Australian Rugby League had 16 teams in it's premier club competition. How would a world club challenge have gone ? Would it have been more competitive ? how many English sides would have beaten their Australian counter parts ? Where would Wigan have finished in the NSWRL ?

I have given all the advantages to the English side in terms of players. English sides were picked on the basis of the 1994/95 Premiership season.

I am not sure about many of the lower English sides and their starting XIII's but i did the best that i could.

spinal injuries

Hey guys over the weekend I effed my back playing sport. I was kicked in the back and fractured/wedged vertebrae (T6).

Unfortunately my GP is terrible and didn't really provide me with any details on recovery besides resting...but I can't just sit around and resting, are there any exercises I can do to increase recovery?

I just turned 30 and I am in relatively good shape/health. Anyone had experience with these injuries and the general recovery time?

Sandow incident

http://ift.tt/1zX9GRf

The Parramatta Eels have confirmed they've spoken to Chris Sandow about an alleged incident in Western Sydney, which saw a car abandoned in an industrial area and later towed away.

But they have decided not to take any further action.

"Chris and his management have provided a detailed account of the incident to the Club," said a club's spokesperson. "At this stage the club sees no need to take any further action."

Check out the pictures of this car on the link. I could not believe at first that those pictures were genuine. Sandow has some questions to answer....pretty poor form.

Aussie Crawl v Guns and Roses

What do you think?

http://ift.tt/1JEelaF

No one official is saying it directly but maybe, just maybe, a lawyer or two is looking at Guns N' Roses and Australian Crawl and seeing not a totally weird double bill but a totally awesome massive bill.
After several years of chatter among fans this week has seen suddenly feverish public discussion about chord progressions, guitar sounds and something something something about a beach (that's the lyric isn't it?).
At issue is whether the Los Angeles band who were the last gasp of decadent rock before the austerity of grunge washed through, may have taken some ideas for one of their biggest hits from the Australian group who brought some upper middle class decadence to Countdown and pubs across the country almost a decade earlier.
James Reyne says he isn't about to take on the might of Guns N' Roses' lawyers.
James Reyne says he isn't about to take on the might of Guns N' Roses' lawyers.
To some ears Guns N' Roses' song Sweet Child O' Mine, a ballad even their guitarist and top hat-wearer Slash thought a bit wet for a dirty little rock band, sounds a lot like Australian Crawl's Unpublished Critics. We couldn't possibly comment, not least because their lawyers are bigger than our lawyers, something which Australian Crawl's James Reyne, who co-wrote Unpublished Critics, might understand, having told one online newspaper: "I'm not about to take on the might of the Guns N' Roses lawyers."
We can let you compare the songs yourself:

One song came out in 1987 and sold many millions on the Gunners number one-cresting, debut album Appetite For Destruction. It has been covered numerous times and can still be found in karaoke bars, Triple M playlists and wherever bandannas are sold without irony. The other was on the 1981 album Sirocco, the second from Oz Crawl, which did rather well in topping the Australian charts and by going four times platinum (which is not quite millions, rather in excess of 280,000). It is a song not likely to be played on Triple M, where they would be more inclined to play Errol or Things Don't Seem, from the same album.
It is being argued that the two songs share a chord progression, a verse melody, a similar guitar solo and maybe one or two elements in the chorus. (Though not any of the lyrics, which may not be a surprise to fans of Reyne whose idiosyncratic singing style was famous/notorious for not always being wholly intelligible.)

All of which may be considered substantial. But also all of which may be purely coincidental. After all, as pointed out by writers such as Tom Petty – who recently settled on a shared writing credit with Brit soul singer Sam Smith after the Englishman's hit song Stay With Me was found to be very similar to an earlier Petty song – there's only so many ways with limited chords and mistakes can happen.
People who believe in karma, those who have a low opinion of Axl Rose or those critics skewered by Reyne in the acerbic original song, might look at the lyrics and wonder if the Australian was tempting fate in lines such as "The singer in the band, he sweats on a pose/And he's really such a jerk/Thinks he can call me stupid/Because he gets a lot of work" and "I've got a death-wish that I can't explain/I've been working on the petulance/And the urchin took my name".
There's an added twist in that both bands were, at different times, on the same label, Geffen, and Guns N' Roses have acknowledged the influence of at least two Australian bands, AC/DC and Rose Tattoo, and presumably had the chance to hear more from the antipodes than your average American rock group.
So while Australian Crawl weren't exactly being smashed on American radio in 1981, it's possible the gentlemen of Guns N' Roses then or later came across the song. And it's possible they, without even knowing it, had some of those ideas at the back of their minds when writing Sweet Child O' Mine. (Though it is possible to say fairly confidently that Australian Crawl did not have the same fetish for apostrophes as the Americans. That's one idea they presumably had all on their own.)
What's going to happen next? With Reyne saying he isn't taking it further it may be up to his publishing company to pursue any action. If action were to be taken. Meanwhile, Sweet Child O' Mine is no doubt playing somewhere in the world right now. Maybe find a lawyer, raise a glass of Australian beer to it and sing along using James Reyne's words: "I'm standing in the background, got my arms on the fold/And every dog's gonna have its day."

Rate Our Coach For The Round 9 Game Against South Sydney

You are invited to rate the performance of Mary for round 7 (Dragons v Broncos).

Ratings are 10 - Best score to 1 worst score. Voters can only select once.

This week I gave Mary an 8.

The boys played very well and would have come away with a win if luck and the ref 50/50 decisions went their way. Instead Souths seem to get all of the lucky breaks which gave them a great hand up.

Mary again had the boys up for the task however, although in the first half it appeared that the Dragons attack had improved, frustrations were plenty in the second half when the players seem to be all at sea in attack.

Yes we lost howver, the boys were up for the game, their defence was great and their attack showed improvement in the first half.

Feedback Query - 'Interstate' Forum restructure proposal

Hi All,

I have asked the Site Administrators to consider splitting the 'Interstate Rugby League' into the below sub forums

- a 'State of Origin' specific sub forum for use all year round

(For information purely related to the State of Origin series – past, present and future)

- an All States Representative Games specific sub forum

(For information related to all levels of Interstate clashes e.g. Residents; Women’s; Tertiary, Schoolboys; Affiliated States and also all levels of any International clashes involving individual states or a combined team e.g. from the recent past ~ NSW tour of South Africa; Combined Affiliated States visit to Cook Islands )

- a State Leagues General News section sub forum

(For information internally related to the home competitions of the respective States including QLD and NSW.
(This would cover in Qld - the Intrust Super Cup; BRL; BRL 2nd Division; Country ~ Regional Championships; District Leagues)
(In NSW – City / Country; NSW Cup, Ron Massey Cup, Sydney Shield, Sydney Districts A – Grade; Country ~ Regional Championships; District Leagues)
(In the Affiliated States – any and all past and present internal news of a club and representative nature e.g. Selection trials; Exhibition games)

My reasoning was that the threads related to non-Origin issues possibly get lost in the high volume of Origin traffic especially when the talk of Origin is at its peak.

Very much aware that State of Origin is the highpoint of our domestic calendar – but also believe that the other tiers deserve to have their stories seen and discussed as well.

Happy to hear any feedback or alternative opinions.

Players constantly touted as being 'Made for Origin'

Am i the only one who continually has a laugh when parts of rugby league media constantly throw out their 'made for origin' crap with certain players that are completely undeserving.

The quotes i constantly hear like 'Oh he's a big bopper mate' and 'Mate...he's just made for origin' for guys like David Klemmer and now even Tyson Frizell are hilarious.

It also seems if one journalist picks a player in their 17, every other one seems to jump on board and run with him too for fear of bucking the stupid trend of...being 'Made for Origin'

Hearing he has done his hammy. Looked a little slow last night... This would explain it.

Unsure of how bad it is but expect him to be out for a period.
Aitken injury

Alternate Scenario - But alas He's A Rookie Coach

Lets just pause for a minute and see what might of been if our rookie coach had gone another way, Sliding Doors style if you like.

Firstly there was Ryan Hoffman. The Warriors reportedly picked him up for around $650k a season.
Then there is Marika Koroibete who I am sure hasn't cost the Storm more then $200k.
Then there is Blake Austin, what a pickup for Canberra.
And finally Dale Cherry-Evans who is reportedly on $1.2m a season at the Titan from next year.

Now how come our rookie coach who was also at the Storm and I'm sure had a great relationship with those players, didn't/couldn't get Hoff to the Eels? Considering blind Freddy, when accessing these things would always take a punt on a guy that has played less NRL games and is at least equal in ability to who he signed in Watmough.

I mean if he was looking for attitude and leadership qualities, without the loud mouth crap and dickhead baggage then Hoff is streets ahead and by all reports cheaper.

And what about Koroibete. This guy was languishing next door at the Tigers last year and for the life of me I could not see why. When looking at our own backline last year other then Hayne, Radrada and Sandow, there is very little real speed and talent at the club that could or can play NRL. So then why not throw a few crumbs at the Fijian flyer? I'm sure that if we had a crack at him and the fact that we have Radradra and that he would not of had to move to another State, he would of been ours.

Also the very same can be said for Austin. The guy was braining it even last year in a team that was jerking him around and playing him in virtually every position in the backline and hooker. Again after seeing how inconsistent both Corey Norman and Sandow have been since they both arrived at Parra, then why not take a punt on a player that brings in all the energy and attitude and consistency that no player at Parra has shown for years at relatively cheap rates and again he would not have had to move cities and away from family. Once again I'm sure if shown the right kind of love he would/could of been ours.

Now we come to the most important signing our club would of made in its history, DCE. The rumours were rife that we were looking at him way before we were looking at Foran. But then we started to look at Watmough and DCE rumours were replaced with Foran ones.

Well we all know that Foran and Watmough are mates, but Watmough and DCE are not, so by chasing Watmough DCE was no chance.

But if rookie coach had thought this through clearer, then he would have realised that genuine playmaking halfbacks win you titles. So considering that DCE's management are not happy that their client is leaving Sydney because it will stifle his media aspirations, we would of been a massive chance. We also have one of his best mates here already in Darcy Lussick which is another great hook on the table. So why brush the best young play maker in the game for a hard working one for the same insane dollars???

So if rookie coach had really been thinking like a winner, he would of made something like this his and our reality. Then you throw in someone like Beau Scott, even though old and busted still a good player ala Luke O'Donnell when picked up by the Roosters or Trent Merrin and boy do you have a team that can go places.

Instead we are looking at players like Daniel Tupou who is reportedly asking for $300k a season and has a lazy attitude. Fits right in with the culture at the Eels I hear you say, right?

Well some might say that hindsight is a wonderful thing, but these are scenarios that I and others have and did suggest at the time when they were playing out, but all we get is that we are so negative statements from the majority.

But ultimately isn't it the coach and his staff paid to get it right more times then wrong. Well from where I sit the only signing that he has gotten right is Danny Wicks, genuine quality and Reece Robinson as a filler.

Like I have said before, rookie coach has made way to many signing errors and it will affect the club for at least 3 more years and I don't think he will be here after 2016-17, depending on how long it takes the board to swallow their pride.

It is very sad how we just don't seem to ever get it right. That is why I have massive misgivings on them making the right call on the retention of both Pauli Pauli and Peni Terepo. I can see another F**kup just waiting to happen.
Alternate Scenario - But alas He's A Rookie Coach
