Im not a Sharks fan but I wanted them to win. The team has a fair bit of potential but they looked very poorly coached team tonight. Either poorly coached or the players threw the game plan out the window and did as they pleased.
The discipline was disgraceful and this was from the senior players. Graham gave away 2 terrible penalties and drops a bomb he did not need to touch. Fifita dropped a couple of balls for no reason deep in his own half which led to points for Canberra. Gallen made a couple of terribly lazy efforts in defense that led to tries. You also had Ennis making poor kicks and dropping the ball. He even took it upon himself to make the call of whether they tap or kick. Did he forget he wasn't captain anymore?
They are probably the 4 highest paid players in Cronulla. Don't get me wrong they are very good players and did some really good things tonight. But having so many bone headed plays from leaders in the teeam is unacceptable. They ost there team points in nearly every major incident in the game.
We won't even start on Barba's game. He was a train track out there however I suppose 1st game at the club we should cut him some slack. And what about Gordon jogging back after balls and letting them bounce for another 20 metres. And then stepping in touch from dummy half. It was just horrible from senior players.
Anyway I know it's only Round 1 and plenty of teams are way off the pace. I still expect Cronulla to have a decent year. However I just worry about the way some of the blokes were acting out there. It looked like a team with too much anger and that mentality came out on the field. If the coach has not got over the ASADA stuff well that may come out in the performances. They looked and played lie a team with a grudge tonight.
Just some observations. Like I said guys like Mitch Brown, Robson and co are plodders and you expect some poor play from them. However when your senior guys have so many bone headed plays in them you wonder what the coach has been up to all summer.
I will back them to beat Brisbane as they are a much better side then Brisbane. However the question is will they beat themselves? Raiders were very plucky and give them credit however that shocking from the Sharks. Frantic was a good word used int he call. Maybe they were trying too hard but it was a very ugly performance discipline wise and team work wise.
