BEWARE all NRL referees.
Des “Harry Potter” Hasler has been given the green-light to continue using his wacky new nickname for match officials.
Just a day after Hasler became the first coach sanctioned under the NRL’s new censorship policy that forbids all coaches from talking about referees, Hasler exposed just how open the rule is to ridicule.
After calling a snap media conference at the Bulldogs’ Belmore headquarters, Hasler started referring to the refs as “Voldemort” — a character borrowed from JK Rowling’s famous series of books.
Voldemort was the fictional evil wizard who was Harry Potter’s arch-enemy, spoken about as “He Who Must Not Be Named”.
But it didn’t stop Hasler cracking jokes with a straight face on Wednesday when he was asked what he thought about his suspended $10,000 breach notice.
“Oh, look, well, when it comes to understanding the policy about He-Whose-Name-You-Cannot-Mention, let’s call Him ‘Voldemort’, I clearly understand the policy,” Hasler deadpanned.
“Paragraph 31, subclause 2, that comment on means just that.
“You can’t say anything nice about them. You can’t say anything positive about them. You can’t say anything about the Voldemorts. And you certainly can’t say anything negative.
“You just can’t comment.”
It is understood the NRL reviewed Hasler’s comments on Wednesday, but this time determined the Canterbury coach had committed no crime.
Which only makes you wonder if Hasler will continue his “Voldemort” references on Friday night when the Bulldogs take on their arch-enemies Parramatta.
“It is what they have set. That is what think it is pragmatic and reasonable,” Hasler added.
“If you are an advocate for free-speech it is not too good but anyway, that’s it, we will move on.”
The NRL shouldn’t be surprised it only took this long for a coach to have fun with the new censorship laws.
Years back when the AFL tried the same trick, Kevin Sheedy labelled the umpires “Martians”.
When Hasler received his suspended $10,000 breach notice on Monday, the Bulldogs were told they could avoid the fine if Hasler didn’t reoffend.
And given Wednesday’s comments again went unpunished, you can expect this won’t be the last we hear of the “Voldemorts”.
