Referees - Lack of Control

Yesterday's game just goes to show the state of game in terms of referee performance. The NRL has taken the hard road against coaches talking about the decisions that impact games. In all honesty they may as well scrap the after match conference and let journalists find out injuries from trainers. They are pointless. By muzzling the coaches you have removed the ability of teams to express how they feel about some of the controversy that occurs in games. After all, this is the discussions that lead to solutions rather than sweeping the whole thing under the carpet.

I've seen plenty of attempted tackles on kickers like Graham's go unpunished (this year alone). It looked more like a charge down attempt and landing. I'd need to see more footage to be sure though.

The decision isn't the big issue here. What happened after by the officials was poor game management. Graham was way out of line. I can understand he was upset, but he should have been sent at the first outburst, long before Klemmer got involved. By letting that roll on, you send a message that it is ok to abuse if the decision goes directly against you. Captain or not, that was unacceptable. Not forcing the defending team back 10m on the kick was also an indication that the rules go out the window when you have a tough call go against you. It adds further weight to the 'we were robbed' sentiment as it gives off feeling of guilt. We were fortunate that time was nearly up. I wouldn't have liked to see that go any longer than it did after the penatly.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Respect is earned, and people treat others they way they treat you. The refs need to command more respect and enforce it. The NRL needs to take the muzzle off and make the decisions accountable for referees, while also making the players accountable for their actions. The challenge system can't come in soon enough either. Souths had a massive leg up in that 2nd half, and the final straw was a tough decision against the Dogs. At least the referral system may take some of the 'hard done by' feelings out of game and allow the team to express their dissatisfaction in an appropriate manner. I'm sure we will still have blow ups though.

There is a whole thread dedicated to the bottle throwing. I'm not even going to touch it here.
