My young fella is currently getting driving lessons in addition to me accompanying him on drives.
I have a 2001 Mazda 121 Metro, 5 speed manual and a 1.5 litre engine.
He was told by the instructor only to use 5th gear when travelling at 70 kmh and over. I thought WTF!! That will kill the fuel economy!!
I did a test. Last week I drove in accordance with the instructor's advice and found my fuel economy was shot to pieces. Instead of getting 530-550 kms out of a full tank, it dropped to below 420 kms!!
That driving was mostly done in 60 kmh zones with a bit of 70 kmh and minimal 80-100 kmh driving.
Unfortunately, the Mazda does not have a tachometer so I have no idea what revs the engine is doing while in 5th gear and travelling at 60 kmh. The car does not labour at this speed unless going up a decent hill so its back to 4th gear.
What are other people's thoughts on this?
