NRL introduces largest shake-up of junior rugby league in three decades

Quote:

Junior rugby league has undergone its biggest shake-up in 33 years with a host of rule changes, including the introduction of a "chance" rule, which will come into play when the season returns in April.

The chance rule will be in place in the under 6s competition – the youngest age group to play rugby league – where teams will be given four chances each and will retain possession if a player knocks the ball on or a forward pass is thrown. The referee will call "chance" and the number of the tackle advanced by one. A changeover will still occur if a player runs out.

The other big rule change is the introduction of a vest/wristband to be worn by the dummy half and first receiver, which will allow their team to retain possession even when either of the two are tackled.

Possession was traditionally lost if the ball wasn't passed twice or more, but the new rule will enable hookers and halves to run the ball to the line, in a move designed to increase playmaking and decision-making abilities in the mod league (under 10 to under 12) competition. In the under 6s to under 9s, teams still have to pass twice to avoid losing possession. The rules are largely aligned with the NRL from the under 13s.

Rugby league Immortal Bob Fulton and former Kangaroos star Matt Johns played an active role in the revamp, as did Peter Corcoran, who helped introduce the modified laws in 1982. A review of junior rugby league was undertaken by the NRL in partnership with a Sydney University research team, where trial data was analysed between 2009 and 2014.

Other important changes for under-6-12 games include; the scrapping of all scrums, tap kick given to the non-scoring team to restart play following a try, standardised zero tackle and the removal of conversation attempts in the six and seven age groups.

NRL head of football Todd Greenberg said the changes were designed to keep children playing the game.

"Feedback from players, coaches, parents and referees indicated that fun, skill development and increased participation were key factors in recruiting young players and then retaining them in the game for longer" Greenberg said.

"Essentially, all of the changes have been made with our youngest players' safety and development as priorities. It's all about more fun, more involvement, and an opportunity to promote better technical and tactical skill."

I like this "chances" idea. Itll be brilliant for the less confident kids.

Id like to know if the Rake and first reciever have the same leeway or if only 1 can run from dummy-half and the other needs to recieve a pass....

MOST rugby league players get married during the off-season … but not one week out from the premiership kick-off.

Will Hopoate has always done things differently.

Like taking two years away from rugby league to study to become a Mormon.

And yesterday the Parramatta fullback got married to Jimicina Green — just six days before the blockbuster season-opener against his old club Manly.

It was a private affair held in a temple in Brisbane where he studied.

Only family and few of Hopoate’s closest friends attended the wedding.

Hopoate and Green — a fellow Mormon and McDonalds manager — met while Hopoate studied in Brisbane last year but only started dating in November.

Posting a picture of herself in her Holy Communion dress Green wrote “Ever since I was a little girl I had always dreamt of becoming a bride haha..well the countdown is on. This time next week this little girls dreams comes true!”.

The couple has no plans for a honeymoon with the groom due back at Parramatta training tomorrow morning.

Just watched the game against Warrington, while it is good to see they are doing well there was only 3 Frenchmen in the starting lineup and 7 in the entire squad. I understand they had a few injuries and suspensions but surely there are better players in France than Louis Anderson, Jeff lima and Ben pomeroy.

Five days to go, about time we had a discussion thread.

I read in the Sunday Mail we had an opposed session against Ipswich. Reed was playing left wing, and Copely left centre. Vidot and Maranta swapping in and out of right wing.

Outside Backs 2015 and beyond.

We've been focusing a lot on our forwards lately as it's obviously the area of greatest concern and our backline seems less of a worry and arguably adequate for the moment with some depth to cover us but what about next year.

4 players in the 1 to 5 positions that I'm hoping to see a lot of this year are off contract and will likely be poached if we don't re-sign them soon, namely Nabuli, Aitken, Mata'utia and Nightie.

What should our strategy be with these guys ? Obviously Nightie is a priority but what about the others, 2 rookies untested at 1st grade level (although I have great confidence in both ) and the promising and already reliable Mata'utia.

Even if, as I suspect may be the case, we start the year with Neilsen and Farrell as our centres, our off contract guys have so much potential ( and longevity ) not to mention offering valuable depth. The only other options at present are Runciman, Glymin, Green and whoever we can develop from the juniors.

Who do you want to see on the field ( outside backs ) this year and next ? How long should we wait, if at all to resign the rookies and Mata'utia ?

Keeping in mind that money is tight as we'll also need to sign or re-sign a heap of forwards as virtually all our props / locks are also off contract ( 8 of them ).

LOSSES: Jharal Yow Yeh (Retirement) Jake Granville (North QLD Cowboys) Stewart Mills (Released - Mid Season) Ben Hannant (North Queensland Cowboys) Martin Kennedy (Sydney Roosters) David Hala (Gold Coast Titans) Josh Hoffman (Gold Coast Titans), Ben Barba (Sharks)

RE-SIGNED: David Stagg (2015) Corey Parker (2016) Justin Hodges (2016) Lachlan Maranta (2016) Jarrod Wallace (2016) Dale Copley (2016) Corey Oates (2017) Ben Hunt (2017)

2015 Coach Wayne Bennett – The living legend returns home after winning 6 P’ships here. He has ravaged the playing list and appears to have made some very astute calls despite some of the big names that he sacked before losing
Darius Boyd (6 months) to injury which may turn out to be a blessing . He still has some work to do and 2016 is more likely to be their big year.

TO WIN PREMIERSHIP: Only won 5 from 12 away games in 2014 and lost their last 5 on the road. The first thing new coach Benny needs to do is to get his team winning away from home. Boyd getting a long term injury creates many options and “Billy Slater clone” Greg Eden may get a start now in the early rounds. Anthony Milford is one of the true genuine super star talents in the NRL and he has never had a coach like Bennett so the mind boggles what we may see, but first I expect a focus on defence and playing out 80 minutes. Milford is the club’s best fullback but they have plenty of other contenders and not many able to play 6 although I love it when Hodges moves in to play a pivot role, he is so dangerous.

Ben Hunt completed 2014 as the halfback with the most tries, line breaks, tackle busts, run meters, kicking meters and kicks. Impressive stats but he has a long way to go with tackle five options and running the team as the general. Having two running half’s in Milford and Hunt will be great for scoring points but they are both poor defenders and obvious targets for teams. Hunt and Copley both made 19 line breaks in 2014.

I am going to be fascinated to see how some of the big names are managed with some of these dynamo forwards. I have a huge opinion of Corey Oates , James Gavet, Mitch Garbutt and especially Joe Ofahengaue. If Justin Hodges stays sound then Jack Reed has a problem as Dale Copely is vastly superior. Also Alex Glenn was a favourite of the previous coach and it remains to be seen if he is in Bennett’s top 13 plans. Matt Parcell looms as a 2015 find with the reputation as one of the fittest and fastest players in the NRL. The Broncos have to back up from a pre-season match in the UK, never a good thing to do and have a very tough draw.

Dale Copley, Matt Gillett, Corey Oates and Jack Reed all had off-season shoulder surgery.

Rugby League legend Garry Schofield OBE has accepted the challenge of becoming Director of Rugby for a forthcoming BARA (British Asian Rugby Association) tour of Italy which could involve a meeting with the Pope!

The BARA team will take on the Federazione Italia Rugby Football League (FIRFL) XIII in Rome on the 16th of May with the two teams playing for the White Ribbon Trophy and are in the process of trying to arrange a meeting with the Pontiff in the Vatican.

The match and possible Papal meeting forms part of BARA’s support for the White Ribbon Campaign, a global initiative made up of men speaking out against violence towards women and girls as well as encouraging interfaith dialogue.

The BARA team will be wearing a special jersey deigned in support of the campaign and have been working in close collaboration with FIRFL on a number of initiatives including raising awareness of the White Ribbon Campaign in Italy.

Garry Schofield commented: “I’m honoured to be involved in this pioneering tour to a nation that is fast developing in terms of

Rugby League. We will be promoting some very positive messages wherever we go that only increase the importance and relevance of such a venture.”

Ikram Butt, BARA founder and former England Rugby League international, commented: “We’re delighted to have such a well known Rugby League name as Schoey leading such a pioneering tour and are actively putting in the work behind the scenes to gain an audience with the Pope.

“Pierluigi Gentile, Secretary General of FIRFL, has been instrumental in the development of the thirteen-a-side code in Italy and has overseen a significant increase in players from 300 to over 4,000 active players over the past five years.

“His stewardship has also led to the introduction of a championship league along with the Italian Cup and has been the driving force behind FIRFL’s efforts to become affiliated to CONI, the Italian National Olympic committee which is anticipated to be granted by the end of the year.

“Both the hosts and BARA will unite to promote the shared values peace, tolerance and community harmony through sport and those will be the messages we could take to the Vatican,” added Ikram.

Included in the tour party will be Chris Green, founder of White Ribbon UK and a UN Ambassador and Qari Asim, recently awarded with an MBE and an honorary doctorate for his ground breaking services in enhancing community relations and work in engaging young people.

Ikram continued “As part of the rugby development tour, Qari Asim will deliver a seminar on the benefits of sport and faith with Chris Green also delivering a seminar on the White Ribbon Campaign.

Pierluigi Gentile said: 'We are delighted to be hosting BARA in Rome this May to play against our International team in what promises to be an auspicious occasion. FIRFL share the same values as BARA in using the sport of Rugby League as a social means to engage with the wider communities and address important issues such as the White Ribbon Campaign.'

Established in 2004 by dual code international Ikram Butt (England Rugby League and Pakistan Rugby Union), BARA has been a force for good in terms of promoting community cohesion across the UK through both codes of the oval ball game.

BARA is an organisation which aims to provide positive role models, break down cultural & religious barriers, promote community integration, personal development, healthy living and encouraging participation in sport & physical activity especially through rugby.

The Rabbitohs have been on a sharp upward curve since Michael Maguire's appointment as head coach in 2012. And after two years as defeated semi-finalists they famously went all the way last year, ending that 43-year drought with a bruising finals campaign after finishing third on the ladder.

They may have lost a couple of massive names from the forward pack but an explosive pre-season has many tipping the Bunnies to be the first side to go back-to-back in a unified competition since the 1992-93 Broncos.

Gains and losses

Gains: Glenn Stewart (Sea Eagles), Tim Grant (Panthers), Cody Walker (Storm), Angus Crichton (Schoolboys Rugby).

Losses: Sam Burgess (rugby union), Ben Te'o (rugby union), Beau Champion (Eels), Apisai Koroisau (Panthers), Nathan Merritt (retired), Luke Burgess (Sea Eagles).

No doubt Clive Churchill medallist Sam Burgess will be a massive loss, as will Ben Te'o, and the addition of former Kangaroo and Sea Eagle Glenn Stewart will only go part way to alleviating that. It's still a very strong squad on paper though.

What we know

We know the Bunnies have exploded out of the blocks in the pre-season, sweeping the Auckland Nines undefeated and absolutely monstering Super League champs St Helens in the World Club Challenge. It's no guarantee of anything once the season kicks off but it's a great sign that Maguire has his troops refocused ahead of another long campaign. We also know halfback Adam Reynolds is in the process of stamping himself as one of the great playmakers of the competition, and explosive prop George Burgess is at the peak of his powers following a man-of-the-match effort against St Helens.

The unknowns

One of the big unknowns is how Maguire's men will handle defending a premiership, rather than chasing one. The Roosters went into 2014 with a virtually identical squad to the one that took the 2013 season by storm but never quite hit the same heights.

How they will fill the enormous hole in the back row is another looming question. Stewart well and truly lives up to his nickname of 'Gifty' and will be a huge asset, while Sutton is also a talented ball player, but it will fall to the likes of George and Tom Burgess to replace Sam's explosive hit-ups. They have some holes to fill in the backline with Lote Tuqiri retired and grand final winner Kirisome Auva'a to sit out most of the season through suspension. Bryson Goodwin is a quality player and certain to start the season, and Joel Reddy has been good in the pre-season, but as usual there are a host of young outside backs that will press their claims as the season progresses.

Rookie watch

Speaking off... centre Aaron Gray and wingers Setefano Taukafa and Sam Manuleleuacould each play first grade at some stage after getting their chances in the trials. Chris Grevsmuhl doesn't seem like a rookie anymore having already won an Auckland Nines title, Indigenous All Stars game and World Club Challenge trophy, as well as helping his club retain the Charity Shield. But he's yet to play first grade and is one serious rookie to watch in 2015.

Room for improvement

As you'd imagine in a team defending the premiership there isn't too much that requires improvement. Souths were the third-best attacking team last year (after the Roosters and Cowboys) and the best defensive team. Obviously new boys Glenn Stewart and Tim Grant will be hoping for better years than they had last year, and Maguire will likely be looking for improvement out of Queensland forward Chris McQueen (especially following the departures of Sam Burgess and Ben Te'o) given he only averaged 70 metres and 18 tackles from his 20 games, with just four tries and six line breaks.

Depth

The club has options in every position but can ill-afford an injury to Reynolds or Inglis, or George Burgess for that matter. Former NYC skipper Cam McInnes provides back-up to Issac Luke and Sutton, Cody Walker and Daryl Millard provide options in the halves while Alex Johnston would likely shift to fullback in Inglis's absence; there will also be plenty of forwards jostling for spots.

Fantasy Bankers

Adam Reynolds ($476,000) isn't just the Bunnies' most expensive player, he could be set to be one of the form Fantasy players of 2015, as the halfback and goal kicker in a powerful attacking team. George Burgess ($437,000) is already an elite Fantasy forward but could get even better in the absence of his brother Sam. Greg Inglis ($426,000) is the second-most expensive winger/fullback in Fantasy and always a safe option at the back.

Join the Rabbitohs Verified Fantasy League - League code: CNTSL2JH

Coach Watch

Michael Maguire's job couldn't be safer. He did good things over in England with Wigan and the Rabbitohs have been on a stunning upward curve ever since his appointment in 2012. He's getting the best out of his players and is defending an NRL premiership, having already won the Auckland Nines and World Club Challenge this year. Happy days.

Crystal Ball

We were a little worried the premiership comedown and loss of Sam Burgess could bring the Bunnies back to the midfield in 2015 but early signs (and they are only very early signs) are that that won't be the case. They should be well in the mix come September, and should be strong enough to secure another top-four finish ahead of the finals. NRL.com prediction: 2nd.

Bid team vs ARLC creation

The ARLC have indicated that a decision on the location and franchise structure of any new teams will be decided by the end of this year....

This makes me wonder whether the ARLC even need to involve the current bid teams at all or whether it would be better in the long term to simply create the best possible club from scratch and invite prospective investors and directors towards the end.

Ive always had reservations about the idea of a bid team being handed a licence; just because they were rich/brave/stupid enough to run a bid witout even the assurence of a licence being offered doesnt mean they are the best group to run the franchise. Not to mention the likely factional fighting that will likely occur once bid unity is no longer prime and the clubs direction is up for debate.

Meanwhile the ARLC have shown they are confident and proficient in restructuring clubs that have failed to sustain themselves and that they have low regard for factional infighting.

So what does everyone think? Are the bids (CC Bears, Bombers, Brothers Confraternity, etc.) in the best position to create a healthy club or should the ARLC lead the creation and simply invite a few of the bid teams bright sparks??

Smiths future plan

NRL chief executive Dave Smith has confirmed that a decision would be made this year on whether to expand the competition in 2018 and revealed that consideration would also be given to reducing the number of premiership rounds to accommodate more events and representative fixtures, such as the expanded World Club Series.
Our next rights deal has the potential to secure the game's long-term future.

NRL CEO Dave Smith

Smith outlined the big picture items on the agenda this year while announcing a $49.9 million profit for the 2014 season, which included a $20 million increase in non-broadcast revenue to $119.1 million.

Broadcast revenue of $225.8 million took the 2014 revenue to $344.9 million and total expenditure was $295 million, enabling the NRL to invest further into what is now a $50 million sustainability fund for the game's future.

Insisting that the game has never been in better financial shape, Smith said the NRL would look at expansion and the structure of the competition as a blank page and decide the ideal number of teams, where they should be based and the amount of games in the season before commencing negotiations for the next broadcast deal.

"We will come up with a set of recommendations and a set of options," Smith said.

"That may or may not suggest more than 16 clubs, but it will certainly look at - with a clean sheet of paper - the footprint, the markets that we might want to operate in, how the broadcast rights overlay into those markets, the grassroots and all of those sorts of things that make a successful football club.

"If you think about the Nines, if you think about the World Club Series, if you think about our ability to aggregate the big events, you are seeing growth. I think the key question is the competition structure and how we consider that, where you place Origin, whether the competition is 30 weeks, where you fit international football, how we expand on the World Club Series, because that was pretty successful."

Asked if a decision would be made on expansion this year, Smith said: "Absolutely. It is a key question and it feeds into broadcast rights, but more importantly, it feeds into keeping the momentum and the progress that we have seen across the game".

Perth, a second New Zealand side, and another team in south-east Queensland, playing out of Suncorp Stadium, are the most likely options for a new NRL club but Rockhampton and Papua New Guinea also have official bids.

Smith said former South Sydney chief executive Shane Richardson, who starts Monday in his newly created role of NRL head of strategy, had been charged with investigating expansion, the competition structure and a rookie draft.

While major events such as Origin and the Nines generated a $13 million increase in revenue, Smith said player welfare concerns had to be addressed.

However, he believes the Four Nations and World Club Series offer huge opportunities for growth and Fairfax Media understands that both events, as well as the Nines, have been bundled into the current broadcast rights for no additional cost.

"We have to think about the international aspect of our game," he said. "I think the World Club Series was a phenomenal success and our opportunities to leverage the English club system and leverage the international game are phenomenal, but we can only do that if we get the overall balance right.

"Our players are our No.1 asset so I think player welfare and fatigue have to have careful consideration. What the game has never done is look at it with a blank sheet of paper, which is what we will do going into the next rights deal. It has never considered what is the best mix when you consider player welfare and when you consider broadcast rights and sponsorship deals."

Smith also gave an insight into the NRL's expectations for the next television rights deal when he told the clubs that the game should be aiming for a 15 per cent increase in value per year provided it had its "house in order".

"Our next rights deal has the potential to secure the game's long-term future," he said. "The current deal overcame the historical undervaluing of our rights. Around the globe there is a clear trend for the value of sports rights to be increasing.

"We have an opportunity and indeed a responsibility to capture that value for our game. That means more money into the clubs, more money into the game, more money into the players, game development and grassroots."

Of the NRL's $209.5 million operating expenses last season, $132.8 million was distributed in funding to the 16 clubs and only two - Brisbane and South Sydney - made a profit, with the other 14 losing a combined $38 million.

In addition, the NRL had to take control of Newcastle and this week Gold Coast, while loans totalling $14.3 million were provided to St George Illawarra, Wests Tigers and the Titans.

Smith said the NRL had no intention of being a long-term owner of the Knights or Titans.

"We do need 16 strong clubs within the next rights deal and going forward and we want to make sure we have got the best possible management in those clubs and the best possible leadership for the game going forward," he said.

Life will go on for St George Illawarra Dragons after Trent Merrin leaves, says Jack

Life will go on for St George Illawarra Dragons after Trent Merrin leaves, says Jack de Belin

By Simon Brunsdon

Feb. 27, 2015, 3:11 p.m.

St George Illawarra forward Jack de Belin insists the departure of club favourite Trent Merrin will not derail the Dragons plan to return to NRL finals this year.

Discussion surrounding Merrin's next contract continues to overshadow the lead-up to their round one clash with Melbourne on Monday week.

Merrin and his manager confirmed earlier this week the Origin prop will not be playing in the Red V beyond the 2015 season.

He is yet to decide which club he will call home next year.

De Belin - who has played alongside Merrin since making his NRL debut four years ago - is disappointed his friend is leaving the Dragons but says it won't have any adverse affect on the playing group throughout the season.

"That's just football, it happens," de Belin said.

"It's a business in a sense, people move on or people get asked to leave.

"Football doesn't last forever so while you're playing you've just got to enjoy it and make the most of it.

"Whatever Trent does in his football career is entirely up to him and if he wants to go elsewhere the ball's in his court.

"He's served the Dragons very well and I know he's going to have a successful career whatever he does."

Merrin is reportedly being chased by rival clubs Penrith, Cronulla, Warriors and Brisbane as he counts down to his final game with the Dragons.

No matter where he ends up in 2016, de Belin says Merrin's influence on his own career will not be forgotten.

"I'd probably say the professionalism, he's so professional in everything he does," de Belin said.

"He might not be the biggest or be the fastest, but whatever he does he gives 100 per cent.

"Whatever he does off the field as well he does to the best of his ability, he's very professional."

All players agree Merrin's departure will leave a sizeable hole in the team's forward pack.

The Dragons have already been accused of being "soft" in the middle of the field and too small to compete with bigger forwards.

Willie Mason mocked St George Illawarra players during the last round of 2014 in Newcastle.

Dragons' power packet Tyson Frizell admits the taunts were hurtful but has tried to block out the criticism.

"That was last year, we've got a new playing roster and a different kind of culture in the team," Frizell said.

"We're not too worried about what other people are saying at the moment.

"We're looking forward to the season ahead and we can only let our actions do the talking."

The Dragons have brought in rookie forward Rulon Nutira and experienced big-man George Rose during the off-season to bulk up the team.

From the main thread (I dont know if this is already on the page)...

They brought back the mutherf*cking HENNY PENNY. WOOW!!!!!

Im personally a fan of the mining jersey (very working class, so its appropriate for the Novocastrian ethos).

Id love that as the Away (the white V can f*ck off) with the Main changing to Orange number/collar/sleever to bring the high vis in as a part of the core brand.

I didnt realise we had an ANZAC strip. Im liking the Southern Cross over the badge, but black and dark blue never look good together; grey would have been better...

The ‘Shark Cry’ was introduced to more than 100 kids this morning with pupils from Yarrawarrah Primary and Lucas Heights Community Schools in attendance.

The students were taking part in a four week long Backyard League program at the Ridge Sporting Complex, with the Sharks having the opportunity to engage with kids before the clinic got underway.

The Sharks will return next week to visit those students who they didn't get around to today.

At the Backyard League event the Sharks also took the chance to promote Junior Rugby League and also information regarding the opportunities for boys and girls to register their interest to play touch/tag at Remondis Stadium during half-time of Sharks home games throughout the 2015 season.

Rabbitohs have hit the ground running - Luke Keary

Words & Video: Tom Skolarikis & Chris Beavon

Fri 27th February, 11:59AM A A

Rabbitohs five-eighth, Luke Keary, says that he and his teammates have hit the ground running with training after arriving back from the UK this week following their World Club Challenge triumph.

“I don’t really know what jet-lag is,” laughed Keary.

“I’m a little bit tired, but other than that we feel good. We trained yesterday and we’ve got another big day today.

“We’re home now so that’s behind us. We’ve re-grouped the last couple of days trying to get some sleep in there. We’ll have the weekend to rest and jump into it next week.”

Suggestions that previous World Club Challenge participants traditionally started the season slowly were extinguished by the red and green pivot, who cited mental toughness as the key factor in dictating such outcomes.

“I think it’s all mental,” said Keary.

“If you think it’s going to affect you, it will – if you don’t, it won’t affect you. I don’t think the travel was a burden.

“It gave us time to spend together. How else would you want to spend your time than with your mates overseas?”

OT: IT stuff

IT gurus, I have a couple of ideas that I want to try and get done for work. I dabble a little in networking and DICOM connectivity, but with these ideas I think I need some code written.

Anyone want to point me in the right direction for some basic code writing/programming education.

I wouldn't mind having a go myself, but otherwise I will just draw up the idea and get someone else to do it.

Need the brownie points at work, so having something that is more than an idea would be good.

2015 NRL Tipping Competition

Gidday strangers, just a question at this stage (and apologies if I have missed it elsewhere) but, are we going to have one this year ??

2015 NRL Tipping Competition

Unfairness of the Draw

So upon looking at the draw for the opening rounds of the season, one thing I noticed in particular is this.

The Bulldogs get five consecutive games at ANZ Stadium between rounds 4 and 8. They come up against Tigers x 2, Souths, Dragons and Manly. I understand that the Tigers for some reason enjoy taking big games to ANZ, as well as the fact that Souths and Bulldogs share the same home ground. So even when they play each other away.....they still play at home. Also, Dogs don't have to travel interstate until round 9 when they head to Townsville, and after that have just three other matches outside of NSW (Round 11 in Canberra, round 14 on the Gold Coast and then round 22 in Brisbane.) So this means they avoid the dreaded trip to Melbourne and NZ.

So that will be 4 interstate matches out of 24 regular season games.

The Roosters dont leave NSW after a trip to NZ in round 14. After that they have all their matches in NSW.

Meanwhile on our side of town, we cop three consecutive away visits to Newcastle, North Queensland and Manly in rounds 15, 16 and 17, then a home game in round 18, before we travel to Canberra in round 19 and then Auckland in round 21.

How is this fair?

Unfairness of the Draw

How Good Are The 2015 Dragons?

In a prevous post, I've predicted the Dragons will make the top 4 this season providing we can play Packer in the early rounds of 2015 and of course, if our players play to their full potential.

This is not just a wild prediction; I came to this conclusion after comparing the talent of our top 17 players against the top 17 of last season's premiers. So I have graded the top 17 of each club by allocating points 1 to 10 with10 being the highest score;

Dugan 9 ........................Inglis 10

Nightingale 10.............. Johnston 7

Nabuli 6 ........................Millard 6

Matta 'Utia 6 ................ Auva'a 6

Aitken 5 ........................Walker 8

Widdop 8 .....................Keary 6

Marshall 7 ....................Reynolds 9

Creagh 7 ......................Sutton 7

Thompson 7 ................Lowe 7

Frizell 7 .......................Turner 7

Merrin 8 ......................G Burgess 9

Packer 7 .....................Grant 7

Rein 7 .........................Luke 8 94

Sub Totals 94............94

De Belin 6 ..................T Burgess 7

Cooper 6 ....................Tyrrell 7

O'Brien 5 ....................Stewart 7

Rose 5 .... ..................Clark 5 2

Sub Totals 22.............26

Total 116 ....................120

So, this is my estimation and I am sure others will come up with their own. From the above figures, we are even on paper when it comes to the run-on 13. However, we fall away with our bench forwards right now.

And, if the likes of O'Brien and Rose can lift their contribution, we surely have to be in the hunt for a top four spot this season.

Ma'u

Supercoach related question for y'all.

What are your thoughts on how Arthur plans on using Ma'u this year?

Last year he had a breakout, got good minutes (sometimes 80) and scored well.

However with the wealth of options you guys have in the back row/lock - how do you think he'll go?

By my count you have Paulo, Paul, Terepo, Moeroa, and Watmough who would have to figure into backrow and bench spots.

Plus add Wicks and maybe even Israel's bro are outside chances throughout the year.

What are your thoughts and theories?

PS good luck this season, I've always had a soft spot for Parra.

Ma'u

Cartwright

My panther brethren, I need some supercoach advice.

Do you think that Cartwright will become an 80 minute player this year?

He played 80mins once last year and killed it.

My concern is with Taylor likely being 80mins - and having Peachey, Brown as must includes in the 17, that if another 2nd rower sneaks onto the bench (or Idris moves to 2nd row), his minutes will stay stagnant.

Wot you lot reckon?

Cartwright

The B Factor

Forget the X Factor we have the B Factor and it feels good.

It has been a long time since it has felt this good to be a Broncos fan. Some fans including some Bronco fans call Bennett over rated, past it etc. Well he has been with us less than a year and we have signed two international players in Blair and Boyd, Folau has publicly expressed an interest in returning to the Broncos under Bennett, Inglis sees the Broncos as his only option in the NRL for his next contract according to his manager, Merrin is a 50/50 chance to join us next year, probably higher considering his desire to be close to surf/beach and Penriths distance from it, and I bet if the Broncos approached SBW now he wouldn't call us a club on the slide.

We have top notch rep players in their prime ( Except Inglis who would still give us 3/4 great years ) wanting to come back or too the club.

exciting tomes ahead indeed thanks to THE B FACTOR.

Guardian Article - Knights prospeccts for 2015

Newcastle Knights

What could have gone wrong did go wrong for the Knights in 2014. From off-field player misbehaviour and ownership embarrassments to on-field tragedy and player disinterest, Newcastle endured a truly horrific season and one that was unquestionably the most difficult in the career of coach Wayne Bennett.

Bennett is gone in 2015, replaced by his predecessor Rick Stone. Stone is a major downgrade on Bennett – to be fair, unless Craig Bellamy or Des Hasler are appointed to succeed Bennett, it will be a major downgrade – but he is popular with the players and should at least inject some energy into a lethargic group.

It won’t be a lack of effort that will hurt the Knights this year. Nor will it be a lack of class. The Newcastle team is littered with quality players among their outside back stocks as well as in the back row. Tariq Sims was a big addition over the offseason, giving the Knights some forward punch, while the emergence of the young Mata’utia brothers has put pressure on a very good three-quarter line.

Unfortunately for Newcastle, they suffer from the Big Mac quandary in the halves. Jarrod Mullen and Tyrone Roberts are good enough to do a job – and occasionally it is delicious - but they rarely satisfy for long.

And that is where their season looks like it will come up short. The pack should go forward. The outside backs can finish. But the link that brings it all together just isn’t there. Mullen is still talked about as having potential despite the fact he is nearly 28 and has a decade of NRL experience under his belt. Roberts has struggled with consistency. Hooker Adam Clydesdale had just one try assist last year. The ingredients are there for Newcastle. The lack of a chef is the issue. Nick Tedeschi

http://ift.tt/1A8hmcj

Nick Tedeschi certainly seems to follow the 'church of Bennett' even after the crap he has dished up at the Knights for the past few seasons, gives Stone no credit or kudos whatsoever and openly slams our halves as the weak link - hope this gets posted in the locker rooms for Stone and the players so they know who to follow up with around round 26

ingli$ concerned about 'off field workload'..

have to love the spin that comes out from player managers..

Quote:

GREG Inglis’ hectic workload away from rugby league is taking a toll, with the South Sydney superstar showing preliminary interest in dumping the NRL and shifting overseas.

The Daily Telegraph has been told Inglis, 28, is becoming “mentally weary” after years of being pulled and pushed into promoting the NRL.

Inglis’s manager, Allan Gainey, has discussed whether the NRL should “compensate or recognise” the Souths star’s increasing workload. If not, the Queensland and Australian champion could walk away, aware European clubs would comfortably pay a rich transfer fee.

“The NRL and the game use Greg a hell of a lot. He helps promote the game and is the cover page player,” Gainey told The Daily Telegraph. “He is used all the time and common sense should prevail.

“People don’t realise his demands and work overload. It affects his family. He gets mentally weary. I feel sure Greg might one day say he wants me to check out what’s out there. We haven’t sought any offer but overseas clubs are coming to me. There are possibilities.

“Greg could go overseas and get paid handsomely and not have all the stress. Other star players have left the game. The NRL should hope Greg doesn’t.

“Greg gets overwhelmed at the workload off the field. He isn’t leaving but Greg never says never. Two other champion players, Cam Smith and Johnathan Thurston, are interstate. Greg has the pressure of living in Sydney.

“The NRL should make every endeavour to keep him in the game. I think he should get some compensation or recognition. (NRL CEO) Dave Smith has to work out whether he wants Greg to stay. If he does, we should have a talk.”

Inglis knows he could earn more money overseas and have less off-field stress and pressure. He is under contract at Souths until the end of 2017 and has just been made Rabbitohs skipper.

He will certainly play this year at Redfern but may explore his options again after this season.

“My heart is here, and I’m still contracted to Souths,’’ Inglis told The Daily Telegraph on Wednesday. “What comes beyond 2017, who knows. That’s what it is at the moment. I’m here at Souths now, I just have to keep my options open for future years to come.’’

Gainey doesn’t necessarily want Smith to top-up Inglis’s contract — just to avoid his client burning out.

“Greg is very loyal to the club and game — he could have left a few years ago. He was 24 hours away from joining Essendon until (then NRL CEO) David Gallop stepped in at the last minute,” Gainey said.

“He loves rugby league is under contract. He would also be in line to be an Immortal. But I think the NRL should look to help Greg after football. He has a lot of offer and would be a great ambassador for the game, especially on the indigenous side. Greg is a deadset rugby league person and loves Souths. But you never say never.”

Inglis said he felt fresh despite looking battle-weary with stitches to the side of his right cheek after his involvement in the All Stars fixture.

“I’m tired after this flight, but I’ll be back at training and will be running around. I definitely still get excited about the start of a new season, and it’s only around the corner.’’.

so i ask the question - is ingli$ being paid for his off field work or not?

if he's being paid but finding the additional work too much, just like anyone in a job who is doing overtime / a second job, they can always stop before burnout..

if he's not being paid, then he should be looking for a new manager..

but i found this quote amusing, given he was all set to move to brisbane..

Quote:

Greg gets overwhelmed at the workload off the field. He isn’t leaving but Greg never says never. Two other champion players, Cam Smith and Johnathan Thurston, are interstate. Greg has the pressure of living in Sydney.

but, in the spirit of discussion, do we think the NRL is using a wide enough range of players as ambassadors? too few?

Unfortunately this year only two clubs felt they could enter the league so there will be a home and away play off for the title between Edinburgh Eagles and Aberdeen Warriors

Strathmore will play a one off match against Aberdeen Warriors reserves and there will be a 9s tournament held each at Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Strathmore to complete the 'season'

Personally I think the RLIF and/or RLEF shouls be stepping in to sort Scotland Rugby League because they've fallen so far behind even the likes of Ukraine and Czech Republic in domestic development. It is only because of the hard work Aberdeen Warriors are putting in that the game hasn't folded up there. Shame as Aberdeen Warriors are a very well run club just isolated

Parramatta Eels’ bold plan to become Australia’s No.1 sporting franchise

Dean Ritchie EXCLUSIVE

The Daily Telegraph

February 26, 2015 12:00AM

THE Parramatta Eels have unveiled a bullish strategic plan to become Australia’s No.1 sporting franchise.

Eels chief executive Scott Seward has had a gutful of on-field failure.

He wants to fix the problem, starting now.

The Daily Telegraph has obtained a full copy of the Eels new strategic plan - titled the ‘2020 Vision’.

The paper was presented to 250 club members on Wednesday night. By the year 2020, Parramatta has boldly predicted they can:

* Win two NRL premierships;

* Play in the final series for six successive years, including a minimum of two grand finals;

* Deliver a $1 million operating profit;

* Have 50,000 members;

* Have an average home crowd of 26,000;

* Train at $25 million new high performance centre in Parramatta.

A clearly frustrated Seward said: “We haven’t played in the finals since 2009 and that’s just an absolute failure. This club has to play in the finals every year - that should just be an expectation. It is totally unacceptable (the club hasn’t won a premiership since 1986). Clubs like Parramatta shouldn’t ever win a wooden spoon.”

The strategic plan covered every possible issue — with answers and resolutions. Some may be unattainable, others are realistic, if not cheeky.

The paper asks Parramatta to be “united, honest, progressive and ruthless.”

It reads: “Rest assured we will be ruthless in our pursuit of success and delivering all elements of the Eels 2020 Vision.

“We want to known as the most professional sporting brand in Australia.”

Under another headline of ‘The Parramatta Way’, the club vows to “be brave and ask the hard questions - put the issue on the table. If you say it, do it.

“No shortcuts - take the time to get things right.”

And in another category, the club vows it will not tolerate:

* Passing the buck - offloading responsibility onto others.

* Throwing others under the bus - blaming someone else to cover for your mistake.

* Reverting back to the safety of ‘That’s what we have always done’.

* Being quick to say no.

“At the end of the day, we are here to win a comp - it’s as simple as that,” Seward said.

Seward stressed his club had to change its mentality.

“We have to ask the hard questions - even if it something we don’t want to do. We have to confront and challenge each other,” he said.

“We don’t want to take short cuts - we have to do things the right way and we have to give every idea a chance to succeed. There will be failures but we prefer to try ten things and get one thing right so we can change the way the business is going to be run.

“It is a change in mindset. We’re not just going to do it the same way it has always been done. We have to try something different. You have to move forward and change with the times. When I started here, there were a lot of people saying ‘that’s the way we have always done it’. The results would show me that’s not good.”

Parramatta won successive wooden spoons in 2013 and 2014 and haven’t won a title in 29 years.

“We were last on and off the field - and it was a fair gap,” he said.

“Do you strive to get to eighth or say ‘stuff it, we’ll go around you and be the best’. That’s the mentality we want. We think if you are built to win one title, you are built to win multiple. You have to change, you have to adapt, you have to try something new. We weren’t doing that. We are trying to aspire to be better than we’ve ever been.”

Parramatta’s plan for $100 million plan for entertainment precinct between Leagues Club and Pirtek Stadium

Dean Ritchie EXCLUSIVE

The Daily Telegraph

THE future has arrived for the Parramatta Eels.

Club CEO Scott Seward unveiled plans on Wednesday for a $100 million entertainment precinct between Parramatta Leagues Club and Pirtek Stadium.

The development will include:

* A six level carpark for 1500 cars;

* A six storey, 200 room hotel;

* A precinct that will include a fitness and aquatic centre, bars, cafes, restaurants and ten pin bowling centre;

* A completely revamped Leagues Club;

* An upgrade to Pirtek Stadium or possibly a $400 million knock-down, re-build which will accommodate 35,000 fans.

Parramatta is also building a $26 million high performance training centre at Old Saleyards Reserve, 1.5km from the stadium.

It will house two full-size training fields, cafe, community facilities, education class rooms, child care and medical facility. It will also be home to the Parramatta football club offices.

Parramatta will pay for the new precinct, while the Government will be asked to assist with the training facility cost.

Eels officials have asked that a light rail line to run from Parramatta Station has a stop outside the stadium.

“It’s massive,” said Seward. “This brings us back into the game.”

This isn’t a proposal - it will happen.

The team start training at their new facility this weekend.

Over the next three years, the high performance centre will be built and completed.

Parramatta hope the entire precinct project will be completed in six years.

“It will secure our financial position as a club and as a powerhouse,” Seward said.

“We have to be brave and have a red-hot crack at it. Parramatta is the capital of western Sydney so let’s give it the stadium it deserves.”

The new development will create more than 300 new jobs.

“This $100 million development will be one of the most exciting ventures in our club’s proud history that will see us provide members with services and entertainment to rival any other club in Australia.

It will ensure our ongoing financial security for decades to come,” said Eels chairman Steve Sharp.

“On Parramatta Stadium I share the same vision as the members that this should be a complete sports precinct that the City of Parramatta and the people of the greater western Sydney can be proud of. My commitment to this cause will be unwavering and the club will be at the forefront of lobbying Government and stakeholders into matching our investment.”

Parramatta Leagues Club CEO Bevan Paul added: “This investment will transform Parramatta Stadium and the Leagues Club into a world class sports and entertainment precinct – an unrivalled destination for western Sydney.”

Daly Cherry-Evans price tag shows what a bargain South Sydney Rabbitohs got with Adam

>IF THE money on offer for Daly Cherry-Evans is spot-on, then South Sydney have landed an absolute bargain with their own half-back Adam Reynolds. While Cherry-Evans is shopped around by his management for around $800,000 a year, red-hot Reynolds showed tremendous loyalty to stick around at Redfern for roughly $300,000 less.

While Reynolds is yet to play Origin or an international like Cherry-Evans, he is the reigning premiership No. 7, was crowned man of the series at the Auckland Nines, and produced another starring role for the Bunnies in their World Club Challenge victory early Monday.

If his pre-season form is anything to go by, then South Sydney have to be considered a fair dinkum chance of becoming the first team to make it back-to-back titles in a unified competition in more than 20 years.

Reynolds could have fetched more money had he wanted to test the market, but loves Souths, knows they’ll remain a premiership threat, which is why he recently extended his deal until the end of 2017 for an estimated $500,000 a season.

According to Fox Sports Stats, Reynolds had more try assists, forced more dropouts, and made much fewer errors than Cherry-Evans last season.

He also happens to be one of the best goal-kickers in the game.

With all that in mind, is Cherry-Evans really worth $300,000 a year more than Reynolds?

Titans and Cronulla fans will certainly be hoping he is because their clubs have gone public with their hopes to lure the half-back away from the northern beaches.

“Adam wanted to show Souths loyalty, but at the same time our focus was to source his market value,’’ Reynolds’ agent Steve Gillis said.

“His deal puts him within the club’s top-earners bracket, bearing in mind most players in premiership-winning teams are often prepared to make sacrifices to keep the group together.

“He’ll continue to benefit from playing behind Souths’ aggressive forward pack, and I anticipate rep footy will now be well within reach.’’

Breaking into the NSW side won’t be easy with incumbent Trent Hodkinson helping the Blues to a drought-breaking series win, and Roosters half-back Mitchell Pearce also sure to mount his own case for a recall.

Given Reynolds’ efforts in Souths’ 39-0 thumping of St Helens, he couldn’t have asked for a better start. The heavily-inked little right-footer touches down in Sydney with the rest of his teammates today.

Bunnies great Mario Fenech said of Reynolds: “I’m really impressed with Adam, he’s really matured and he’s got better as the years have gone by. He’ll play an instrumental role in our success.’’

Reduction of teams in the 2019 world cup

Worthy of its own discussion IMO.

I'm not sure there's a worse body at expanding their international footprint than the ICC. The decision the reduce the 2019 world cup to 10 teams is a shocker.

Dave Richardsons attempts to explain it seem pretty pissweak to me.

http://ift.tt/17wLuaI

Talking up their pathways, despite the fact that it clearly is far more difficult for associate members to qualify for this world cup.

Then conceding

http://ift.tt/17wLuaN

Especially if playing and potentially dropping games to these sides threatens your own chances of playing premier events.

Numerous associate members have been attacking the ICC directly for their policy

http://ift.tt/1ahgRYt

Whilst, despite his media conference not being put up by the ICC, Mahela Jayawardene had this to say

There's also a petition going around on the net to stop them reducing the number of sides.

Now there's a fair argument that the current format is flawed, because it is clearly designed to get the top 8 to qualify, therefor makes the first month or so of cricket pretty academic (eg England are still a decent chanc eof qualifying despite being utterly dreadful, such is the allowances).

personally I'd favour a 16 team competition. Four groups of four. Top two sides from each group qualify for quarter finals and from there it is a straight knock out. Still allows for 31 games, and there can be higher value attached to the games given there is far greater percentage of meaningful competition involved.
